The Japanese started imitating Chinese cash in the middle ages -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_currency
so there are a few which fit into this forum.

Here two of mine side by side with the Ming Dynasty original:

Japanese-Cash Japanese-Cash

"Ko bi tsu ho" - Mitchiner#4577a copy of
"Hung wu t'ung pao" of T'ai Tsu (1368-1398) - Mitchiner#3639+

Japanese-Cash Japanese-Cash

"Eira ku tsu ho" - Mitchiner#4578a copy of
"Yung lo t'ung pao" of Ch'eng Tsu (1403-1424) - Mitchiner#3641+

All original Japanese cash are more modern and don't fit into this forum.

My oldest official Japanese coinage is from the 1620's. I was under the impression that prior to that most coinage was still coming from China. Interesting coins.

Korea imported Chinese cash before they started making their own in the 1600s, so all those don't belong here.
With those there is no chance of confusion. The Japanese copies are cruder (as can be seen) but also generally lighter.
The only other country which made 'indigenous' cash before 1600 were the Vietnamese who started in the 10th century.
Their cash coins are thinner and smaller, will scan some of those I have to post next week or so.

Japan was late in the game of coins but where they were other commodities traded in its place.

Low quality mass produced swords and silver bullion were long exported to China, Korea and Vietnam.

I don;t have a low quality mass produced sword to show you but I do have a high quality sword from the late 13th century, that has recently come back from polish. Sorry about the non numismatic item but I figured I would post it to prove my point about trade and the economic system in Japan. (no pun intended.)

my oldest Japanese coin is from the 18th century, I thought it was a fake Chinese coin when I first got it (thin, kind of strange looking characters).
