Hi All, I Know very little about coins, but find it interesting and will begin to "look hard" at coins I was wondering if anybody knew about a new coin I just " inherited" one 1899 Morgan Silver "o" dollar - uncirculated... in a velvet box rainbow on front- shiny brand new on back. BUT this coin has what appears to be a hairline crack going around where the writing is on back by the United States going all the way around. Can anyone give info about this and possibly it value. Would appreciate any info. I THINK I've uploaded images... sorry so new at this.

to CCF! Unfortunately I don't see a photo. We need a good, high-quality pic of both sides.

I'm not an expert on Morgan's but a picture would help a lot if you can take one or two and post.

JerseyJudy, to the CCF. W/out pictures, what you are describing sounds very much like a die crack...

Welcome Jersey Judy what ever you do DON'T clean your Morgan!! It looks like a nice envelope toned coin, meaning it was stored in an envelope for a while. It does look like a very nice strike for the New Orleans mint. Nice condition, might grade MS (mint state) 64 or 65 I'm sure some others will chime in but in that grade high end retail value would be in the $80-$200 range. Hope that helps you a little.

the "line" you speak of is called a die crack. I can kind of see it, the focus on the image is a bit off for my eyes. I am not a morgan collector save one 1904-O in my collection. There are collectors who live and die by the Morgan dollar. I suggest you edit the title of your post to reflect you have an inherited 1899-O Morgan that you'd like opinions on. You'll draw a lot more attention from the right people. Quote: I Know very little about coins, but find it interesting and will begin to "look hard" at coins That could turn into a lifetime look that becomes awfully expensive and has your closest friends and family thinking you're nuts for obsessing over little round pieces of old silver and gold. Tread carefully with what you wish for in Numismatics. Wishing you much success and luck on your journey.

If you could somehow get the word "Morgan" into the title, you will probably get an overwhelming response.

Nice look to it. Maybe Mint State 64?
