I have two Japanese 1 Mon coins that have me perplexed. One has the Osaka mintmark and the other the Sendai mintmark. My old KM catalog lists the Osaka as a brass coin and the Sendai as iron. These two are just the opposite of that. My Sendai looks brass and the Osaka is picked up by a magnet. Is there anyone that can give me any info on these two coins? Are the coins backwards or is it me?

14ers. I checked my books & they say the same thing. I don't have these coins yet so I can't tell you what mine are like. Sorry I couldn't help.

The ones from Osaka, were made of an inferior mix of copper and iron,
according to this (in Japanese): http://kosennosekai.sakura.ne.jp/z42.htm
He also says that they were of better quality than others of the same time period, that were made of just iron. Maybe that is why they are listed as copper or brass in catalogs.

The brass looking one, I suppose it could be a bosen, but I am no expert so don't take my word for it.

Let me know when you post them on ebay. I think I'll bid on them.
