This coin is a curiosity to me. It appears to be a 1718 Sweden Daler (KM#361)emergency coin overstruck with a 1719 Sweden Ore (KM#364.1). If this was an official restrike, they did a pretty poor job of it. It also looks like it was in circulation as it is quite worn.

Any thoughts on what this is or if I'm correct in identifying the two coin strikes?

Yes, you are correct, the host coin is a daler of the "mercury" type. Overstrikes are quite common on Swedish coins from the 18th and early 19th centuries, and yes they were done officially.

What was the "emergency" in 1718? A lutefisk shortage? If you are not Scandinavian you may not understand the joke.

Thanks for posting.

It was during the Great Northern War, and Sweden wasn't faring very well at that point in the war.

Is that the war where there was a battle between one army on foot trying to maneuver through chest deep snow while the other army on skis? I think it was Russians on foot and Swedes on skis.

Yes--silver coins were also debased to help finance these wars.

If anything it was probably the other way around Tryna. The Swedes invaded Russia in the winter, made the same mistake that Napoleon and the Nazis repeated. Lost way more troops to the environment than to enemy bullets.
