Earlier today I got this thin planchette 2014 penny (on left in images) , the funny thing was I didn`t realize it was odd until the afternoon were on checking it I saw no edge rim and ... the mystery deepened !

While flipping it round I was struck by how thin it was (it`s a true true thin-pot) (see image below, thin penny on top) The diameter of the coin in question is the same as that of the control sample 2014 penny I used for comparison ....

Could it be that someone has taken the raised edge part off? It looks tampered with to me.

I am not sure you have something to be excited about. At least with US cents it is common for the edges to be noticably thinner or thicker. It has more to do with how well the rim strikes up than the actual thickness of the planchet I think.

I did not see where you posted a meausered thickness or weight of either coin and my computer is not showing clear enough pictures to make a determination. I hope you found a treasure.

Thanks Tryna The whole coin is thinner than the average penny {from my naked eye I would estimate its 35-40% thinner}, unfortunately I dont have scales to measure its weight . Interestingly enough unlike the US pennies, our pennies here dont usually have unusual thicker or thinnner edges (at least those that make it out of the mint), I check all pennies I get

Regarding tampering I have checked the coin thoroughly and discounted chemicals like acid . Given that these pennies are copper plated steel if someone had taken the raised edge off that would have resulted in the wearing or complete removal of the copper plating around the edge since these coins only have a 25 micron copper plating ...

The color of the coin is due to circulation and possibly coming into contact with a wet surface recently . The lettering around the edges is weak and on closer examination it (the edge & rim) showed no abrasions or signs of physical tampering unless there is some other possible type of tampering that leaves smotth edges?

Interestingly enough on the subject of 2014 coins especially pennies , many have weird colorations, dark toned circles and some have spots reminiscent of freckles I have seen this with a lot of 2014 pennies and some 2p`s freshly delivered from th armored truck ......I have wondered about the conditions they were stored in after being struck....

I've noticed that some of our current coins have higher rims than others of the same denomination and date.

I'm wondering if they difference is in the blanks - are they coming from different sources - as happened with Queen Victoria's early bun pennies ?

I've heard acid makes it a lot thinner. So that might be it. But the fact that the rim alone looks like its unusually thin compared to the rest of the coin, maybe its not acid.

I doubt it's acid or ground down because the copper will be gone. It's just plating.

DaytR, can you take a better picture of the thin coin?
