After learning a little bit about what works and what doesn't as far as photography is concerned, I decided to reshoot this Greek Tetradrachm. Its one of my coins that I haven't played much with lately. It totally felt like a new coin.

Feel free to make comments and suggestions...

Anatolia,Pamphylia, Side c. BC 200
AR Tetradrachm 30 mm x 15.88 g
obverse: Helmeted Head of Athena
reverse: Victory Advancing hold wreath, Pomegranate in reverse left field.
Monogram: Wreath / AR
ref: CNG31-63010

Very nice coin and lovely picture. You really display it's great patina very well.

Incidentally what do you think are the pros and cons between a white and a black background?

I actually like both. I have slowly been reshooting my coins against various back ground colors and "painting" in the background. In my experience black is more forgiving when it comes to mending the edge to the background. Otherwise I like black it seems more professional, the color of the coin is appears much richer in my opinion. It makes group photos look very cool too.

Group Shot of the Western Satraps to scale.

Yes I think you are right about the black. It seems to enrich the natural colours of the coin. I have used white up until now (not quite true - when I first started out I photographed against a red background, not noticing that all my coins were reflecting the redness around their edges giving a rather unpleasant effect) but now that I photograph against a neutral non reflective slate grey background and then insert the white, it would be easy for me to flip it to black using the software....I might give it a go.

Anyway...beautiful coin and photograph Ancientnoob!

They seem to be very good. I have a friend who has been taking great photos of the moon using that model.

I can't wait for the software that accurately recognises the edges of objects and inserts the block colour background automatically. That will be a great camera.

those are wonderful pictures AN. I've started "painting" my backgrounds black as well, I'm starting to get better at it. I still have trouble painting right at the coin edge by hand...but I can't get an "auto edge" function to work as well as I can with a mouse and hand with the coffee shakes.
