My macro lens for my camera came in yesterday and I couldn't wait. I pulled an ultra rare and unique 2002-D Cent from under the paper clip box in the back of my desk drawer. I placed it gently
on top of my desk (it only bounced 3 times).
I took three shots, handheld, the first two, were lit by the overhead fluorescent lights. I did not like them, (a little fuzzy )
the third shot, I used the on camera flash and bounced it off of a sheet of paper. better. I am going to have fun with this.

Great natural color and pretty darn good depth of field in the first pic. Too many times photos make the coin almost seem unreal in a way. I think you're off to a good start. The copy stand will certainly help, and also if you can get the camera directly on top of the coin with no angles involved.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to future photos!!

Welcome to the forum, love the username.

Try either gettting the coin perfectly level with the coin or set your aperture higher (numerically), I think this will help focus the top of the coin

If this doesn't help talk to superdave

I agree. I think we need a sticky with just the questions that have been asked in this forum and Dave's answers to them.....

I know the top of the cent was soft, but considering that it was shot handheld and at F2.8 the depth of field is pretty shallow.
I am looking forward to this weekend so I can take a few photos. (with my new copy stand)

I knew I was going to like you the minute I read that.

Listen, guys, although I'm really thankful for your kind words, I have to reiterate that I'm doing nothing that you can't learn for yourself. I've learned virtually everything I know about coin photography while a member of this forum. Zach, you yourself are proof of it. Your learning curve has been steep and visible, and now you're getting results as good as anyone. And that illustrates a point. Anyone with a halfway decent camera can take good coin pictures, if they're willing to learn what it takes to maximize the potential of the equipment they have, and settle for that. Not everybody can get clear, 2000-pixel coin images, but anyone can get the best their own camera has to offer. Frankly, the results Zach is getting have left me somewhat in awe of what the S5 IS is capable of. All Zach did was figure out what it took to squeeze it out of the camera.

7070, you you're doing pretty darn good for handheld shots. What type of camera are you using? It takes a fair bunch of megapixels to get a detail view like that. I can't wait to see the copystand shots.

SuperDave:

I was using a Nikon D80 with a 60mm Macro lens. Its a 10 megapixel camera.

I picked up a couple of goosenecked desk lamps at Ace hardware (marked Down) and 2 100 watt daylight fluorescent
compact bulbs.

Photos on the way. Stay tuned...
