Hi Guys,

Firstly I am sorry if this post is in the wrong section.

I have recently been asked by a friend to sell some coins they inherited but do not want. I know a little about coins but not alot.

The collection is but not limited to -

300 Silver dimes, Roosies and mercurys.

60 40% silver halves

30 90% silver halves

100 silver quarters

and hundreds of War Nickels and wheat pennies.

I am just wondering what your opinions would or where to sell them, ebay, coin dealer? somewhere else?

thanks for any input.

You could start by letting a dealer give you a price. That would give you a starting point. Or get a book and look for key dates and such. Or post pictures on here of the coins. There are enough experts on here that could give you a price they may be worth.

If you search for inheritance, I believe there are several guides already posted which have great information. All I would suggest is to have a list of each coin/year/mint mark.

The big questions you need to ask you friend is how quickly does he need/want to sell. If he needs to sell quickly, he will not get as much as possible, as you will likely have to sell to a dealer at a big discount.

To maximize profits, you would probably need to sell on ebay, but there is a lot of time and effort to go this route. Selling on Craigslist is another alternative, and you can get more $ for more desirable items (silver) but sometimes you get people who don't show up.

Good Luck.

Like Ace said. Without key dates, etc basic melt today would be at $1020.01. That's just starting. Think how you want to do it. Quick - take to a LCS and don't be surprised if the offer 50%. Without key days just remember this is junk silver and if you sell it yourself people will usually only pay spot (give or take.)
Rest in Peace

Mostly I always tell people to keep away from selling something for someone. Not always, but sometimes it causes a lot of trouble. For instance you tell them you sold the Dimes for XXX and they start thinking you could have made double that and are keeping the rest. In some instances I've seen it actually creates a massive problem between members of the same family since some start thinking how someone cheated someone.
My suggestion is to look for a Red Book on coins and buy it for them. Then tell them to look up all their coins and write down those approximate values. Then using that, assume you'll only get about half since that book's prices are excessive and selling anything anywhere is never what you think. I would tell them to go to ebay and list what they have and go for one price for all.
I know it sometimes is difficult to not get involved with such situations but in the end, better results.

remember that the prices for coins is quite distinctive. There is a set price for a given coin; don't even take 1 penny less than stated as coin collecting is a competitive market. You will easily find someone who will pay Red Book price for a coin, so please invest in one (It's very cheap) and look up the prices and take exactly that price for the coin.

Posts like this one trouble me. Are folks patient enough to do some leg work or are they in a rush? Don't get me wrong: the majority of folks could care little about understanding what they have in interest to liquidate fast. I guess on many levels coin collectors should be happy when these folks dump silver at the bank. It's the indifference that troubles me I suppose and if folks are happy enough with face value why should I care. Here, a good friend will help another get top dollar (or as close as possible). How about the bad friend, the desperate friend, or the indifferent friend? I hope it works out.
