RCM is that the outer nickel plating is small (around 10 microns) compared to full plated coins (e.g UK nickel plated steel coins with one 25 micron thick plating) hence in time a lot of Canadian coins will start to exhibit similar patterns to the coin pictured......
A research firm ,Fraunhofer ,found that nickel & nickel plated steel coins wear out at a rate of around 1 micron a year in circulation so the multi-ply plated Canadian coins should theoretically retain their outer nickel plating for around a decade after which the wearing should start to reveal the copper underneath .....in a similar fashion to the pictures above
