DA 345Â°. Obv. AUT K M A ANTWNEINOS CEB. Laur. bust right, remnant of cloth before and after. Rev. DHMARC EX UPATOSTOB / - "-E. Eagle standing slightly r. on thunderbolt, wings spread, head and tail left, laurel wreath in beak, an eight-pointed star between the legs. Ref. Prieur 257. Considering the fruitcake Elagabalus was, this portrait is a very generous one. I wonder whether it was because of the connection to the region that Elagabalus and his mother Julia Maesa had. Clearly Rome didn't appreciate having the cult of Heliogabalus foisted upon them, but I wonder did Emesa enjoy the veneration, or resent losing its cult statue and having all those foreigners practising its religion?
