I saw this coin on ebay and looked, and looked and looked at it. In the end I couldn't pull the trigger and bid because I couldn't be sure if it's original or has been cleaned and retoned.

It looks to have faint hairlines, but I don't know if they're from circulation or cleaning.

What do people think?

Seconded-cleaned. Good call on not pulling the trigger. I think, you wouldn't be happy with this one once it is in hand.

I also agree. The toning around the eagles wings is the tell for me. Looks like sulfer toning. Good call on skipping this one.

I think it's been lightly cleaned and has AU+ Details. Looking at the completed listing shows it sold for problem-free VF30 money - not out of line for what it is but I wouldn't have bought it for $180.

I would search for a problem-free VF+ piece with good eye appeal. They are available regularly for this date/series at under $200.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I passed.

I'm still learning to spot cleaned and retoned coins. I have a ways to go.

AU-details. Not a bad looking coin from the seller's photos but I wonder if the cleaning would detract more in hand.
