this is the worst side with several large carbon spots... I believe the bottom dark area is a shadow.

If it's a proof coin you might as well clean it if you want to keep it.
Or just spend it.
The damage has been done.

Lincoln proofs cannot be effectively cleaned - they are VERY easy to damage. Using anything beyond the Polarity Ladder solvents will likely result in damage and a worse looking coin.

What year is this coin and what does the obverse look like?

Personally I'd leave it as is! At the very maximum if it ate at me too much... would be a quick submerge in acetone (extremely clean acetone!) and follow it with verdicare treatment, let it dry, airtite it forever (or at least within my lifetime).

But I am extremely reluctant to verbalize this... Proofs are very fragile ...I've personally experimented on ones I've found in the wild roll hunting...the results are always not what you want/expect or worse.

WOW! A 36 proof! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE ANYTHING ON THIS COIN. Those types of carbon spots cannot be removed without permanent damage and this is a rare and valuable coin. If you don't like the spots, sell the coin and buy a replacement.

Oh, looks to be a brilliant proof (there are also satin for this year), probably PR-63. As long as that's dust in the obverse pic.
