Wanted to chime in and say: buy it!
As a collector, the joy comes in the having.
If you've put off buying when prices were high and have the budget for "today's price" pull the trigger and enjoy the coin.
If next year's price is lower still, use the same budget to seek out a missed issue.
I have no doubt you are wise with your $$, spend some of it and enjoy that massive elephant.!

well you know its been a balancing act on my end.
I didnt want to buy one because I knew prices would end up lower, and sure enough they have and are. I am sure that there is still more down side. But I have been waiting for several years now. I do have plenty of patience.
I guess, to me, another factor is, can I get it this year,,, since we should see more of a dump in prices... and I think yes.
Again, I am not looking at the coin as an investment. I am looking at it as pure lover of elephants, of somalian elephant coins, of coins that feature elephants, and I havent seen a coin this size featuring one of my favorite animals.
what I DONT want to do is buy when the dealers are busy driving up prices higher. I am going to be astute and buy when they are done driving artificially the price higher.
Let me also say dealers are entitled to do what they need too. I am all for making profits. I have no beef at all with that. Thats why the buyer has to be wise and he will get his opening. Again, for us in the collecting community, we need to be careful how we buy, that we are getting a good deal in line with falling PM prices.
MCM is the only one I have seen with the best price on this kilo coin. Every year they come up, I see them, and I say "nahhh, silver and gold are still dropping" so I scoff at it. I think yes, I buy around here and the price drops again.
However, I do like this design and this an area I am comfortable with in terms of price. I am prepared to watch it go lower, but thats ok, I am not buying for investment, I just want to get a price I see value,, and hey as I write this I think we are getting closer for what I think in my mind lol
I appreciate everyone's feedback here, love you guys!

Yup. Do you think we see silver below $10 in the next few years?

Yup That's been almost my same internal dialogue on a 5 ounce silver coin. Problem for me is that I'm not in love with a design, but know the right one would look great in a big 5 ounce size. Who knows though, my attentions are so varied right now... Love to see some photos of your elephants or rhinos. And thanks for the reminder to watch the fine print on transactions.

yup7676 Quote: Dealers can do whatever they choose to make money. Thats not my business. However, to me, I hope everyone is careful when they go shopping on down days, because dealers are not adjusting prices accordingly. I agree. My guess is that they are not hedged, and are 100% exposed to inventory they bought at higher cost. You can't hedge neurasthenic value, but you CAN hedge AU and AG with futures. MUICRO GOLD contracts are offered at 10 oz, with very low MARGINS MIny Silver contracts are offered in 1000 oz, with affordable MARGINS

I honestly have no idea, nor opinion on it. Even if I guessed, I am sure I would be completely wrong on the price. All I do know for sure and confident is prices are in a downtrend and remain in a downtrend until they break it upwards.

Only thing I will say is this. Had the holders of AU and AG shorted the BULLION value with futures, they could be selling (BULLION) inventory at their normal profit, and at CURRENT PM values.

so silver futures are down again... and look at MCM's price on the elephant kilo, barely budging.
YET, they want to let you know its "real prices enabled".
They keep this up, and I will refuse to buy a kilo again for another year. I want the coin but it MUST be in line with market prices for silver, period.
I realize they need to maxamize profits, I respect that. I am ALL for max profit. But not on my back, sorry.
Again, please be careful where you buy, verify you are getting a "deal" in line with prices of the metal. If you aren't, dont buy. Silver is NOT going out of supply....
I know its hard.. look at me, patiently waiting for years to get a kilo. I need more patience....

Yup, like you, I collect as a hobby and if you like the coin, I wouldn't wait.
As you get older, it gets more and more difficult to really enjoy hobbies such as coin collecting. My vote would be to get it while you enjoy it. You may not enjoy collecting next year, and could be dead.
I don't say this flippantly. I have an aunt (only about 60) with a few weeks left to live from the big C.
Sad, but a reminder how brief life is and can be.
If you are investing, I agree you should wait. Actually, if you are investing, I wouldn't recommend silver other than maybe 5% as I don't think it is a good investment at all.

I said I was going to pick up some silver at $16+ per oz.
I didn't!
Now that silver came below $16, and I am watching on the side line again.
I am not sure if dealer willing to break even or lose money in this down turn market for these collectibles, even though some consider them bullion.

I see that!!
HOWEVER, it still is not near 698... when silver was much higher this was the price they had it listed at.
I think as silver slides here, less folks will step in to buy, as they are going to not enjoy the feeling of buying, finding prices dropped more. What happens when they find out dealers aren't dropping the prices in line with PM prices as well.
I am in stalking mode....

Has anybody stopped buying limited mintage silver coins for their collection because of the price of silver?
I am not buying bullion! Probably never will! But I am sure looking for great price silver coin buys.
Even the mints are to slow to drop their coin prices let alone bullion buys.Even auction houses are not dropping their res on silver coins and they are still in place for the next auction.
But in saying that there is a lot of really good silver coin buys out there. Who cares about bullion?
