Medieval Pillar of the Community 3772 Posts	Posted 11/02/2014 04:56 am Coins two and three are Emperor Hsuan Tsung (1821-1851) "Tao-kuang T'ung-pao" minted at the Board of Revenue mint in Beijing. Btw, the lower pictures are the obverses. The first coin is older, probably Ming dynasty. Report this Post to the Staff

The first coin, I was not able to match it to any of the examples from the Ming Dynasty. I can't read Chinese, so I'm just trying to find a similar symbols, but I don't know exactly what to look for. It is a Kanei Tsuho coin (å¯¬æ°¸e€šå¯¶). This particular specimen has interesting calligraphy. The "right leg" of the è¦‹ in the kan (å¯¬) extends upwards and is referred to as a "tiger tail". Both the å»´ of the tsu (e€š), and the "dot" above the ei (æ°¸), are written in a cursive style. I do not collect Japanese coins so I cannot tell you when this particular coin may have been cast.
