'Valecrucis' showed us two nice examples of Ilkhan coinage. Another Mongol dynasty took over most of the area the Ilkhans ruled, namely the Timurids. The name derives from the founder Timur Gurkan, better known in the West as Tamerlane.

Timurids

Plenty information can be found easily on Tamerlane, so I refrain from posting it here.

Timurids Timurids

AR Double Dirhem (1.5g) AH785 (1383+) from Timur Gurkan (AH771-AH807 = 1370-1405)

Obverse: Kalima, date below
Reverse: ... Suyurghatmish ... Timur Gurkan
ie Timur acknowledging Suyurghatmish Chatagai as (puppet) overlord.

Timurids Timurids

AR Tankah (5.1g) AH8x8 from Shah Rukh ibn Timur (AH807-AH850 = 1405-1447) Sawah(?) mint

Obverse: Kalima with Twelve Imans around
Reverse: ...Shah Rukh...xx8

Interesting to compare the Kalima in the two different writing styles.
And hope to get more people interested in the coinage of the various Mongol dynasties - didn't someone state recently he wanted a coin of Tamerlane?

Interesting coins. From what I read Tamerlane's conquests were pretty brutal.

But then more people will buy Mongol coins, meaning less for you

I have had this one coin, which I believe to be Timurid, for a long time. It isn't in the best condition. I confess that until recently it has been relatively unloved and I haven't even got around to photographing it properly yet. Sorry about the quality of the images! But perhaps, Medeival, you could confirm my tentative ID for it:

AR Tankah, Shah Rukh ibn Timur
825AH, 1425AD
Semnan Mint
Mitchiner, WOI, 1926

Timurids

So far have not purchased one single identified/attributed Mongol coin. All bought as unattributed silver rubbish for up to A$5 a pop - identification/attribution is (more than) half of the fun.

Don't have my Mitchiner unpacked yet (might take a few more weeks) but I have taken a note. It certainly looks like it though, compare mine above. If the quoted Mitchiner number is correct, it clearly is - the above Tankah is cf.Mitchiner#1927+ and I have a Fals from him cf.Mitchiner#1944, so your number falls within the group covering Shah Rukh.

yeah...i think I'm starting to get interested in these things. they are going to be more challenging for me with only writing to go by. even if I can't read the ancient languages I can usually tell what type of coin it is broadly at least by the artistic style of the coin busts or animals or whatever. I can spot an artuquid coin from a mile away, as long as I can see the side with the bust.
