The inscriptions are quite clear: DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG & VIRTVS ...CITI ALEx (x=A or Delta) but the rest of the coin is not the very best. Anyone have a clue or a gut feeling to whom it should be attributed? (And if yes, on which basis.)

Thanks guys. 'Biancasdad', yes I know that Wildwinds have the reverse only for Valentinian II but while Wildwinds has a massive amount of Romans that does by far not cover all. Did you check in RIC? If yes, I would take that as confirmation. Thanks for your effort in any case.

Medieval, I don't have the RIC volume for this period but Helvetica's pages are pretty thorough for the types covered. In addition, I would add that the bust itself looks like Valentinian II, much smaller than papa. http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm

Thanks 'Biancasdad', please don't misunderstand me both Wildwinds and Catbikes are excellent sites but RIC is still the most complete when it comes to types of Roman coinage. Glad that you mentioned the bust size, this was the reason that I favoured Valentinian II myself (didn't mention it to not prejudice comments from others).

I agree Medieval.
Maybe Victor will comment. He may have this RIC volume.
Still, Its hard to believe that this type exists and doesn't show up with at least one example from any mint on wildwinds, the spread sheets, coin project, or on any other of the databases I have checked

Thank you for your effort, really appreciated, it's just that I am very careful with attributions. Here another example: It's an AE14 and I am quite confident that it is from Akragas/Agrigentum (or one of the nearby towns) based on the crab, but I haven't been able to find a reference to the rat/mouse on the other side.

Quote: RIC volume Found my (photo-) copy of RIC. The legend ending "CITI" occurs on aes only in Alexandria and in the later periods (ie after the death of Valentinian I) as such. @ 'pishpash': It's a smallish coin and those images are the best I can do with my scanner (at least with my current expertise).
