Thought I'd give nickels a try, so I bought a roll. Found a 38-D and a 70-S.

I got a 1964 Dime from the coke machine at work. So much for the idea of these not taking silver!! This is my first real 90% silver coin found in circulation. I have found silver in boxes, but as we all know that's kind of cheating and not a reeeeal circulation find!

Nowadays with most machines having bill acceptors on them, and alot of them using dollars...it is possible that silver dime came from a roll placed in the machine to make change. just a possibility.

I get a lot of my circulation finds from change received from
automatic coin dispensers. The grocery stores in Denver use these,
so the cashiers don't hand you coin change, it just dispenses the
coins in the cup for you. The cashiers don't generally get to pick
out the coins from the locked coin tray of such machines (unless
they had a cooperative manager willing to unlock it for them!)

Coin acceptors generally reject silver and other non-standard
metals (due to electronic signatures of the alloys), but the coin
dispensers will dispense any coin that's the proper physical
shape, so they can (and do!) dispense any coins that
are the same size as the coins in general circulation. I've received
a fair amount of Silver Dimes, dozens of Wheat Cents, a number of
Wartime Nickels, many 1¢ to 25¢ Canadian coins, one 1943 Steel Cent
and even a €.02 (Two Euro Cent) from these change dispensers!

A co-worker went to the grocery store for lunch today and got a
weak-date VG 1925-P Buffalo nickel in change from one of these
dispensers at the express lane, and she was showing it off
to all of us! It was yours truly who identified the date,
with a magnifying glass (since I don't have a loupe at work! ).
She almost went into shock because she thought I said "1825", but
I quickly corrected her with "No, that's 1925, this design
wasn't made until 1913!"

Indeed, if the grocery store has a 'partner' agreement with
CoinStar, they can empty the CoinStar machine themselves and
dump the coins into their own shotgun rolling machines.
CoinStar gets their 8.9% vig by automatic deposit.

So, if a Buffalo nickel is dumped into the CoinStar, it may be
loaded into a register's coin dispenser or wrapped in a shotgun
roll the next day.

Last May, I found a 1938-D Buffalo nickel (F, almost full horn)
in a grocery store roll!

Trivia: I've also found out that the NCR self-checkout machines
used by Home Depot and grocery stores can be configured to
accept Clad Half-Dollars, but none I've found are actually set up
that way (JFK's will simply drop through to the return slot).

Found a 1987-S nickel in some rolls I was searching. Another good thing was I got 10 rolls and I'm east coast in the "P" mint area. About 75% of these were "D" mint and really high grade.

This 2006 New Zealand 10 cent coin was given to me in change in place of a Canadian cent while I was in Montreal this week.

Someone came into my work tonight and paid me with a roll of nickles. I opened it up and to my surprise it was filled with mostly wartime nickles in the condition seen below. Needless to say I was psyched .

In my register drawer today, found an English 10 Pence, a damaged 1940-something Nickel (not silver), and an approximately G+ 1918 Lincoln.
