Alan Hepler Valued Member United States 128 Posts	Posted 07/13/2011 11:01 pm I bought a wood box at an auction which had to be broke into as it was locked. Found a coin which I can not find a match for based on the star pattern of other bust dollars of that or other years. I posted this before and I think it got removed for some reason. It is not from circulation, but a find. It does match the Red Book of having a diameter of 40 cm, but the weight is lower at 23.5 grams. There is edge lettering which is not covered in most places I have looked. Mr. Bowers said in a auction that this year 1797 may have been produced into 1798 as too many 1797 coins have been graded than made that year (only 8,000)and he estimates based on no factual evidence that 60.000 were made in 1798 with the old date, but the coin shown has more stars. Any idea of what this variety is, or a fake? Report this Post to the Staff
