The Canadian nickels were shaped that way from 1942 through 1962.
I'm going by memory, but I think that's correct.
I can remember way back (1962) when the round shape was resumed. I wondered why at the time, and recall reading somewhere that it was because the round shape helped the dies last longer. Not sure if that was the case, but that's what I read.

I would like to play devil's advocate for the found coins in circulation and ask how many have put coins back into circulation that many of the collector's seem to be pulling out of circulation? I have been putting many different coins back (nothing valuable, just pennies and nickels) for awhile and hope that some young prospective collector's find them to help fill theit "whitman albums". Berry, I do the same thing. Also, I like to put SBA's, Sacagaweas, JFK's, and $2 bills into circulation.

Steel nickels? If you're talking about those with the big mint mark on the back they've got a little bit of silver in them.

Gary thanks for giving back!!!! I am in the process of using Eisenhower dollars around our businesses here. I only hope that some "true coin collector, preferably young" gets the Ikes. Most are AU, some are Bu, but no vaulable coins though and certainly no silver. Berry

Found a Barcelona $1 and a Howard Florey 'C' $1 in the pokies at small lawn bowls club I visited on Friday. That's the 2nd Barcelona $1 I've found. Also found a bUnc 1997 Smithy and a rim Cud 2003 Women's Suffrage today I don't make a quid noodling through the pokies, as I either come home with a dozen Uncs or I've dropped a tenner in the machine.

I found a nasty rusty steel cent and a 1937 Buffalo nickel today. Unusual that I find a Buff with a readable date! Rachel [:p]
