The longer my son and I roll search for nickels, the more we get of some of the less rare nickels. Currently we keep the following: 1. Liberty nickels2. Buffalo nickels3. Silver Nickels 4. Nickels with a mintage below 15 million Since we are getting more of the less rare nickels, and I'm not interested in hoarding masses of nickels, I'm thinking about cutting our saving of nickels in the fourth category back to just nickels with a mintage of under 10 million. I know some nickel collectors keep everything before 1960, but for other more discriminating nickel collectors, what is(are) your cut-off point(s) for keeping nickels?

I am on box 62 of nickels since the spring of this year. At first I did keep anything 60 and before. As you know they added up really fast. All I keep now is your first 3 listed. If I come across any Proofs or 2009s I keep them as well. I have sold some 2009s locally for $1.00 a which is nice.

Wish I could help you with diminishing your stash ... alas I keep all nickels prior to 1959.
Understand the logic for reducing the piles ... hopeful that you figure it out in a way that works for both of you.

Jon - I have a similar list but on #4, in addition I keep most D and S mint nickels (pre-1957) as they are harder to come by here in the east. I also keep 1938s and 1958s because of their lower mintages, select AU/BU nickels, proofs, and any error/variety coins.

I agree with Rackster- not to easy to come across D and S mints over here. :)

With my son home from college, we talked and decided to stop saving the non silver Jefferson nickels with a mintage between 10-15 million except for the 1942d which is fairly hard to find. Thus we returned our extra 1946s and 1948s to the wild.

I would keep ANY nickel minted before 1960, of any design. Anything after 1960 would have to be an error, a proof, or a world coin in order to be a keeper. Have fun!

Why are 2009's special. I've heard the same with cents.

2009's have far lower mintages than any of the other modern nickels. Approx. 50 million as opposed to hundreds of millions. Myself; I keep any non-Jefferson nickels, any proofs, any pre-1960, and anything that is an upgrade.

wheatchaser,
If my son and I kept everything before 1960, after the 400 or so boxes we've probably done, we would have to open our own bank. That is why we periodically decrease the variety of nickels we keep because of the shear volume.
We used to keep, and stopped keeping in the following order:
1939p proofs 1938p 1946s/1948s (just this week)
