I picked this up at my local coin shop (along with a bunch of other stuff). I thought it would be fun to search for information about it but I can't find anything. I expect I am not using the right search terms.

Any help would be appreciated.
The reverse is blank and the amount/value makes me think it is fairly old.

Thanks, my friend.

I didn't know I could do it. I sort of half-remember something about the editing rules changing....

Tough to ID maverick tokens like this one. It's likely over a hundred years old and from a western state.

Thanks, ExoGuy.

Just curious, what makes you think it's from a western state?

I assume that "J. S." refers to some business or location....so perhaps it is a transportation or telephone token.

Hi Buddy ... The denomination makes that most likely as Spanish coins tended to circulate there to around 1900. Rulau's token book shows other tokens of these odd denominations that were used to make change for the one bit and two bit Spanish coins. In the west, practicality took precedence over the law - Coinage Act of 1857. That law was intended to stop the use of foreign coins in trade.

How could there be a "cent" sign on an early Spanish coin?
Not knowing the history about the cent sign hit me in the head.
@Buddy, you did find the edit icon. Searching the Forum Rules there is no mention on how to do this. Interesting but, I do believe to edit your own post it needs to be done within 24 hours.
Lets see what the Mods say.

Yes, 24 hours. Any changes after that will need to be done by a moderator. Send note to staff with edit requests.
