Hi all, I purchased a couple of "mystery" ancient coins and haven't had much luck narrowing down their ID too much. Here's the first:

It appears to be a Roman Provincial with a "city founding" scene on the reverse, which I hoped might help narrow down the ID. But alas, I haven't been able to ID the portrait, either.

Any ideas or opinions welcome.

Without being able to read any part of the inscription it will be difficult to nail it down.
The reverse type was used in quite some of the cities at the Eastern Mediterranean.

Have a look at Beritus, which has a posthumous Augustus in that style.
(Seems there could be something like DIV... behind the portrait.)

The first person I thought of was Augustus. The bust could potentially be him and I know he has a few on wildwinds with the two oxen plowing.

I believe it is a Tiberius though. Check RPC_1657 on wildwinds.

Link removed, Hot linking to wildwinds images does not work.

I am not doubting your ID at all, but I am just wondering what the giveaway is that it is an Augustus of Philippi? To me the portraits on these seem somewhat ambiguous and from Augustus to about Nerva they all seem remarkably similar...and then as Medieval said, these reverse types were used elsewhere too.

I'm a little confused, because hotlinking usually means making the image display on the board here from their site, but I just linked to the image where you had to click it. Does that not work either?

No, it doesn't, sorry. It just spits back an error message.

The only way to link to Wildwinds info is direct to their web pages. If Wildwinds doesn't have a page dedicated to the coin type you want to refer to, you have to say something like "click on the Tiberius page and scroll a bit over halfway down, to the coin labelled Philippi RPC 1657".
