I am not sure what this is, but I think that it may be a ticket to the Hamburg Zoo, good until May 31, 1922. Can anyone verify this or tell me what it is if not that. I received it as a free gift from a stamp and coin company when I was a kid in the late 40s. It may be fake, for all I know!

The small print on the second picture says: 'This note is only valid in the zoo'.
So I would assume that it is rather like a token note comparable to notgeld.

Thanks Medieval. I was not familiar with the term "notgeld" and did not find it in our glossary. Wikipedia defines it thus: Notgeld (German for "emergency money" or "necessity money") refers to money issued by an institution in a time of economic or political crisis. The issuing institution is usually one without official sanction from the central government. This occurs usually when sufficient state-produced money is not available from the central bank. Most notably, notgeld generally refers to money produced in Germany and Austria during World War I and the Interbellum. Issuing institutions could be a town's savings banks, municipality and private or state-owned firms.

Serienscheine notgeld issued by the Zoological Gardens in Hamburg. These were not really "emergency money" as the value of the mark was such that the pfennig denominated notes were near worthless. Serienscheine were more like souvenirs to be sold to collectors in sets (series).

A lot of notgeld was produced to be sold. In a time when jobs and money were hard to come by, making notgeld was a source of income for local govts and so on. They often produced for collectors, hence the nice designs on many of them.
