I can find the reverse design with the four shields on some English coins, and I can find the cross design. But none with the shields and the cross. Was wondering if maybe it was a jeton or token? Or maybe I was looking in the wrong country?

The english coins with the shield are the coat of arms of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland.
I do not have seen the shields with dots.
The coins is mediƫval, but the details are not good for reading the tekst.
The cross is used in a lot of mediƫval coins. In the quarters of the cross there are some symbols.
These can be used for determination of the coin.

As 'Petrus' said, the cross is a common design on many medieval coins.
Based on the design on the right it looks like a Portuguese coin but would need to see more of the inscription to nail it down.
Material? Weight? Diameter?

Indeed well done!
But a better picture should maybe give other details.
On this link there are several such coins, but from different rulers (starting with Alfonso III):
