Here is a recent addition to my collection. I usually don't collect Roman coins, but this one was quite appealing. I am interested in hearing what you think of this piece.
What grade would you give it?
What do you think its value is?
How rare or common do you think this piece is?
What mint issued this coin? I dont see any kind of mint identifier. I would assume Rome.

Obv. Head of Diocletian right, with DIOCLETIANVS AVG around.
Rev. VICTORIA SARMAT, four tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod before city enclosure with eight turrets.

Note: Struck 96 to the Roman Pound approx. 3 grams

actual is 19 mm x 3.00 grams whao...

It is gorgeous. acsearch has it running from about $400 to well over a thousand. Not checked the dates though.

Grade is nearly EF.
By the way, that is a very desirable argenteus you have there!
Nicely centered and struck.
A scarce denomination in good silver.
For a value, I would guess arond the $500 mark for this one.

Beautiful and rare type coin, well struck and well centered. I'd grade it at EF. I don't see any mint mark so this could be one of three mints. RIC 19a Rome, RIC 34a Siscia, or RIC 12a Ticinum. I not sure how to tell which though.

With a few more opinions I will show you all what NGC said about this coin. I was fairly certain that this was quite a valuable coin, normally well out of my price range. I was able to work out a deal with a Vcoins seller and member here Holding History for it. Vk and I have shopped with him a few times. Always a pleasurable experience.

Very nice coin. To your questions:

EF to 'as struck'
No comment on value.
Definitely rare, could be very rare.
My gut feeling would point to Serdica because of the reverse.

it's a beauty, and what a cool reverse. I'm not familiar with the type, but it's out of the league I play in. I must be scarce at least.

AN! What can I say? It is a very exceptional coin. I love that it captures such a specific moment in history and tells a story. It is no surprise that for once you were tempted into the Roman sphere. I am very glad for you. Congratulations. I assume you got a very good deal for it too. I could go on using superlatives, but just assume that they go without saying....

Thanks for the kind words Vale, I am really excited about this piece.

I always try to get a deal, that's part of the hobby and the seller buyer relationship.

on that note I am going to do which I have never done before...

...and give myself some fruit

Nice argenteus you have there.
Diocletianus is well out of my collecting area, but I can appreciate this is a scarce and historical coin.
From a brief review of acsearch it seems the type was struck a various mints throughout the empire, including, Ticinum, Treveri, Nikomedia.
Do you know where yours was struck?

I thought we figured it was most likely Siscia.
