Here is my Septimus Severus Silver denarius.

I know that it is badly worn and that is probably the cause of my problem.

Can anyone please tell me some more about this coin as I am having trouble pinning it down.

Hi TC!

There are quite a number of rightward facing, emperor on horseback, spear raised, types on the reverse of Septimius denarii. Have you checked this link?: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/...verus/t.html If you search the page for the word 'horseback' it will take you neatly through about 28 examples. You can exclude a scattering because they are gold or provincial, leftward facing, no spear etc....leaving about 7 possible alternatives. Because it is so worn it is going to be a bit tough to narrow down further and you probably stand the best chance with it in hand - but even then...

Thanks, V.C.

When I put Horseback into the search bar it leaves Septimus Severus and comes back with Caracalla etc.

How do you get to search just the Septimus Severus for horseback?

Go to the page for septimius severus.

Once loaded, press CTRL F and put in horseback to the dialogue box.

Then press the little down arrow and it will scroll through them.

Without the benefit of a legend it could be one of three RIC numbers. RIC IV #91, 106 or 494. If you can make out some of the legend that will help narrow it down. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

V.C>, P.P., ski. thank you ALL for your assistance.

Ski, I would have loved the coin to have been RIC 106, or Ric 494, - so close but Severus' leg is bent back on both of those coins and on mine it is straight down. Also his hair tie (it has a name) is a different shape. Apart from those things it is almost a match. Thanks would have saved me a lot of work if I had found a match.

V.C. I didn't know that you could do that (and I imagine that a few readers didn't either so thanks for that help.

P.P. - Great tip. I think that V.C. had it too. I tried not only putting 'horseback' in there but I added 'right' as well and it narrowed it down even further (from 28 to 13 - I think).
I did notice that if I stopped at any of the choices for a closer look, I had to go back to the beginning and start again. Short of writing down all of the (column) numbers BEFORE I go looking, is there any other way of avoiding the 'restart' please?

Not sure which browser you use, but there should be two tags next (right most likely) the 'find' field.
On Explorer it's 'Previous'/'Next', on Mozilla it's '^'/'v' clicking those tags allows you to maneuver your search.

Thanks, Med (sorry, I'm old). Please forgive my ignorance but I use 'Google Chrome'.

Is that my browser, and if so are the 'tags' in the same place?
