Am beside myself with excitement. Saw this coin on an online auction a couple of days ago. The pre-bid sat at $19. Couldn't believe my eyes.

Kept my eye on it all week and held my breath as the lot came up for auction, hoping that no one would notice what I did. Bidding opened at a $20 pre-max bid. I bid $22 and held my breath. The virtual hammer came down and this 1991 Libertad was mine for $22 dollars.

However, what everyone didn't notice, is that this is a much rarer Type II Libertad, not the common Type I as indicated by the lettering in "onza". Type I is "onza" and has a mintage of about 1.6 mil. Type II has the lettering "OnZa" and while the mint has never released the exact figures, the scarcity of this coin, as compared to other key date Libertads, indicates that the mintage figures may be far below the key to the series, 1998 Libertad at 67,000 mintage.

The two examples on $bay are going for $135 and $141. Nice addition to my Libertad Album.

Good find and I completely agree that knowledge is key to this hobby.

As Aaron Feldman always said -

No better proof than this buy.

I think I would have protected the bid with a slightly higher snipe - but you did win. Do they really sell for over $100 now?

I wrote this question the other day but apparently didn't post it...
I'm curious if the only difference between the T1 and T2 is the lettering on the front (OnZa vs onza)...I know about the 8 dots on the cactus, but are there any "onza" with 8 dots, or is it only the "OnZa" that has 8 dots?

Been on vacation with no cell service and no wifi. Just saw this inquiry.
No, there were no "onza" reverses paired with the 8 dot cactus obverse in the series, that is what made this coin a puzzling. All the other 1991 minted libertads had "onza" reverses and 7 dot cactus obverses. This coin, no one knows for certain how many were minted, was minted with the 1992 OnZa reverse and the 8 dot cactus obverse, which previously was only used on proof libertads.

In 1992 they kept the OnZa reverse and went back to the 7 dot cactus obverse.

Great looking bullion series and congrats on the deal! Too bad none of mine are the right years for such a score.

Now I need to get familiar with 1987 variety which I dont feel is as evident as the 1991. Let the hunt continue.

The 1987 DDR is a pretty easy catch. It is most prominant on the "MEXICO"

Thank you Denco, I came across that picture as well and will compare it to a regular one.
