Any suggestions on the date on this? Is their any way to get the date to show up? I think I can make out 188? Maybe a 1885? I wish! It would probably be the ugliest 1885. I tried my best to outline the date.

Hi Jack, I took your photo into microsoft photo editor. There you can do an effect "negitive" in Blue, and also do a Image, Balance where you vary the brightness, gamma and contrast. This brings out some more of the image but it's still a toss up between 1885 & 1883

That's what I came up with also. I was thinking I'd get back to it in a bit and see if I could get something a little more definite with the last digit, but I don't think I can.

Thank you so much, I can email you a larger file if that would help?

Picture is on the way to info@bobby*****. Sorry, I was not sure which email to send it to so I found your website under your profile. I hope that email is OK?

That email is fine. If you go to a profile and click on "Send an Email", you don't have to know the email address. It just automatically goes to the recipient through the forum.

I got the pic. I'm leaning toward 1883. That's as definite as I can be. How much detail is on the reverse? If "CENTS" isn't under the wreath on the reverse, then it is definitely an 1883.

OK! Sorry about that. The reverse is even weaker than the Obverse. I can make out the bottom of the wreath and it does say "CENTS" under it. Did the 1885 not have cents under the wreath? I thought only the 1883 had it with or without?

You're correct. Only the 1883 did not have "CENTS" on the reverse. There were also 1883s with "CENTS" though. I think we may just have to be satisfied with having narrowed down to 2 possible dates.

The shape on the 3 of those coins has a distinct shape, I don't have an 1885 coin to compare what the 5 should look like.

Great, thank you both. It is like a treasure hunt. I found this coin in a storm drain that ran down main street when I was a kid along with a couple more victory nickels and some merc dimes.
