I love it when I see my name in a thread title. Metalman, there are a number of Pitted Reverse varieties for 1921. You can find them all here: http://www.vamworld.com/1921-P+VAMsThe only major variety among them I haven't owned is the VAM-1E. Do you have a specific coin of interest?

That gave me a good chuckle this morning. So, I'm assuming he has more he doesn't know about or we would have received his ebay ID already?

Dave I received this coin ,, it looks like a VAM-3N. http://www.vamworld.com/1921-P+VAM-3Nof course I will need to have that confirmed. But it is an exact match for this coin. I will post pics as soon as I get some that are good enough . according to the vamworld site this is a top 50 VAM ? Metalman

Dave, this is slightly off the thread topic, but how many VAMs of the top 100 would you recognize without having the book or website open? I ask because I go to many auctions with literally 100s of Morgans going up for auction. Typically I have about 2 hours to go through coins from culls to mint states. It is easy to sort out the key dates and grade them but to this point I am not searching them for VAMs. I guess I am missing out on an opportunity but do not have the time to study each coin. So, I am curious how many you would see without aid. Is it reasonable to believe that with work you could ID the top 50? Jim

I can spot about 75 1878 Morgan VAMs if I can see the Obverse and Reverse of them and about 10 if I can see the Obverse alone at a distance. SuperDave is a 1921 Expert but I have to say he has been moving in on my territory here lately and been going after my one true love "Long Nock" 1878 VAM's so I have been laying low because I don't want to bid against him on any of them because he switched ebay names on me and I don't remember who he is (oh yeah the money problems also have a little to do with it)

Although it does not show up well in the pics, there is a die crack which runs from the point of the star to just below the top cross bar on the U,,the pitting is inside the U. The pics are far from good ,,but they are the best I have so far . Also please take a look at the area below the arrow feathers ?

Thad actually I'm not a VAM machine I am so far from one ,,Morgan dollars are a very new series for me ,, I resisted collecting them for years I'm kinda sorry I did that now. And the thing is I was only going to collect the O mint coins. Metalman

IC, well, it's a beautiful series IMO. I love them, but as I've learned more and more about coins, they seem pretty common. I've been seriously thinking of selling most of mine to generate funds for rarer coins.

It's a 3N, Metalman. So far, only the second I've seen. Granted, they're the toughest Pitted Reverse to cherrypick since there's so little pitting, but they're also one of the rarest. Below is the one which was in my collection. If yours matches the detail picture, it's a 3N, plain and simple. Nothing else matches. Jim, at this point I'm up on the 1921's, and beginning to know my way around 1878's. I wouldn't recognize half a dozen of the other Top 100's. There's just too much to know. I'm not saying it's impossible; it'd be a lot of study, though. For me, I like the idea of date specialty. Perhaps once I tire of 1878's (and I will tire of 1878's), I'll start hunting Top 100's. There's a lot of competition in that arena, though, and some of the competition are among the sharpest people in numismatics.
