By keeping AU/MS pennies (namely wheat cents) in loose containers that still have a bit of air between the coin and the cover, will they lose their red or red/brown color eventually? Or is this only a circulation thing

I just looked @ my 2009 Lincoln coins/chronicles set & 1 of the proof cents is already toning - putting dessicants in my coin albums now (hopefully not too late).

Try these - http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=ite...8930&alt=web

The amount of air trapped inside the container with the coin is largely irrelevant. What's more important is how airtight the container is: the extent to which fresh, moist air from outside can come into contact with the coins. Most containers that claim to be airtight are really only air-resistant to some extent.

By loose container, not sure what you mean. If you are using those plastic tubes, and there is some space left since not full, there are several things you could do.
1. Fill the rest of the tube with just ordinary coins so no or hardly any room left.
2. Some people have placed a small cotton ball inside to eat up extra room. Good idea except you really have to know if that cotton has any contaminates.
3. Once closed, put tape around the opening to help seal the tube from additional air.
4. Keep all such containers in a box that can be sealed. Difficult though since the air left inside may be sufficient to darken your coins.
5. Send your coins to me and I'll worry about this problem.

Last year I went through several boxes and cans of wheats and memorial cents my father had saved over the course of the last 30 years. I found brown, red brown and red cents. My belief is that the brown is from circulation and that you may experience toning dues to humidity and air contaminants but they will not brown.
