In just a week or so I will be getting my bonus at work. I wanted to spend a portion of this on my FIRST gold coin ever.

Even though I prefer silver coins over gold any day, I cannot ignore the fact that Gold is worth more and this may be my chance to get the coin.

My question is what is the size comparison of the 1/10 & 1/4 ounce gold eagle compared to everyday American coinage?

Thanks
John

1/10 AGE is 16 mm in diameter.. very close to a dime (18mm dia)

1/4 AGE is 22 mm in diameter ... which is close to a nickel (21mm dia)

Between the two.. your premiums will go down more the closer to an ounce you buy

If your budget will allow it, definitely pick up the 1/4 ounce. From what I have found the dealers mark up the 10th ounce coin quite a bit in comparison to the others as the poster above mentioned.

I would rather pick up a gold maple; two reasons:

premium is the lowest among government minted coins; AND,

purity is 9999 !

1/10 oz - they say easier to barter w/fractionals for after SHTF.

Personally? Yes the old gold is nice -

Plan on getting at least one of each at some point 1/10 , 1/4 , 1/2 and everyone needs at least one 1oz , we don't know what the future holds so having different sizes will give you more flexibility plus then you can decide which size you like the most.

Thank you for all the posts but what is the difference between .999 and .9999 purity? Is it 22 carat compared to 24 carat?

Both .999 and .9999 are regarded as 24k or pure gold John. The difference between the two is one has been assayed to a higher standard and determined to have 9,999/10,0000 parts gold whereas the other is only (at least) 9,990/10,000 parts gold.

To convert karat to purity simply divide whatever the nominated karat is by 24 .... so 22k is .9167 purity, 18k = .7500 purity and so on.
