Here's the story...live and learn.

I've been looking into coins of Ancient Spain and Iberia for a couple months now, picking up a few and doing research as best I can since most of the info is in Spanish.

Well, while doing some web searching I came across a site called Denarios.org/falsas, and what did I find?

One of my favorite coins listed with others as a cast fake.

Not only my coin, but my photo as well, taken off CCF from when I first posted it a long time ago.

Here is the coin, but a second photo of it.

A-Fake-In-The-Midst.....

After studying my coin carefully, and the site, and as many examples as I could find I tend to agree it is probably a fake, although a very good one.

Too late to return it as the seller had a 10 day return policy, but I wonder if I should inform him anyway, I wonder if he knew?. He is a reputable seller I believe and probably thought the coin was fine.

If you go through the site you'll see there are many coins believed to be fakes not only on ebay, but also by reputable dealers.

This is a relatively new site to post fake Iberians and over time I suspect it will grow a lot. On the web I've seen some for sale that are clones to ones posted there, and even to mine.

Although my coin and the other clones like it don't have the 'mother' coin presented, many of them do.

OK,enough, I'll put more info on the fake sticky later.

I've always thought it would be nice to have one of my coins as a plate coin, but I kinda coulda done without this one.

Aah shucks.....Live and learn.

Ugh...can I have it. I dont believe it to be fake. The flans were cast a head of striking. Very few of these exist in as struck coindition, I have never seen one and I have been really interested in this particular coin type for quite sometime and "almost" found the one I wanted....ugh..Doucet.
It wouldbe extremely difficult to prove this is a cast fake, is their a fake die. I think its playa hating. You couldnt make a strick determination from a photo unless it was a known type. With a proven investigation, especially on type where not much known.

Any idea when and by whom it was made? Certainly doesn't look like a cheap modern one.

Yes Anoob, I agree it maybe not fake.

The site states that there could be coins mis-condemnd and maybe this is one, or perhaps the mother?

They usually condemn a coin if there is a 'clone' that appears to be from exactly the same die, but I'm a bit confused as to what is really the process.

There is another there that is obviously a similar strike?

Midieval

I couldn't say when, but certainly not ancient, they state the shop was Las Cabezas de San Juan. Seems many fakes come from there.

Much research to do.
