I was wondering what this is. I got it rather cheap on ebay recently. It is a big and heavy coin. The tarnish leads me to think silver but according to the description, it may (or may not) have gold in it as well. Can anyone give an opinion?

The description says:
Republica Mexicana, Guerero or "GRO" Dos (2) Pesos coin from 1914. Reverse says: "REFORMA JUSTICIA LIBERTAD Y LEY". It is also stamped ORO 0.595, which leads me to believe that this is more than 50% gold. This was the age when Pancho Villa & Zapata were fomenting revolution, but the president was Venustiano Carranza.

This is a BIG coin, measuring approx. 1 1/2 inches in diameter. It's heavy too.

I'm certainly no expert, but I'd be very surprised if that coin has any gold in it, particularly if you got it cheap. Did it come from Asia (e.g., China) by any chance? If so, it is almost certainly a cast copy of a real coin- there are tons of fakes on ebay and you have to be very careful.

When I get home I can look it up in a book for identification.

By the way, welcome to the site! I'm sure someone will be along presently with a more knowledgeable response than I.

No, I got it on ebay, from the USA not Asia. There are LOTS of fakes coming from China. I've seen lots of people get burned from there.

Hmmm... well anything from 1914 Mexico should say "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" instead of "Republica Mexicana". The letters look clunky to me too, and the "ORO 0.595" appears to be stamped post-mint. I can find similar-looking coins in my book, but nothing exactly like yours. There should be a wreath under the eagle instead of writing, for example. So my guess is that it is a fake or some sort of privately-minted coin. It could be an authentic private-mint insurgent or war coin.

I googled "ORO 0.595" and the following page came up: http://www.coinsandhistory.com/Mexico_2.html

There is a coin similar to yours on it. If someone has a Krause book maybe it would be in there- the book I am using has a decent amount of war coinage, but yours doesn't show up. I hope it is authentic- sure would be neat if it is!

The coin is listed in Krause, Mexico (Revolutionary), Guerrero state, KM# 643, issued by forces loyal to Zapata. Krause lists it as being made form "gold-silver", though the "0.595" is apparently the intended amount of gold in grams, not the fineness.

As to grade, it's hard for a non-expert like me to tell; you never know what an unworn coin is "supposed" to look like. I'd call it at least VF, probably EF. Krause (2006 ed.) lists it at $32 in VF, $60 in EF.

Here is one I found on the web. Down towards the bottom. The bird side looks different than the one you have. Other than that I know nothing about them.
