I posted this in the main forum with the question of how to remove the green residue, so, green stuff aside, I'm posting here to get some help with the grade. This grading can get a mite confusing for me at times.

I think people are right on in that XF/AU range. The problem a lot of people have when grading early Washington quarters is that we get an image of the modern fully detailed obverse stuck in our heads and forget that the original design was a tad cruder (but a bit more honest in my opinion.)

I'll go with VF-35/XF-40 - decent detail left on the design, but it doesn't look like there's much luster left (could just be the pictures). Also, Washington's curl and the eagle's breast feathers are a bit flat. I agree, silver Washington quarters are tough to grade.

Nice key, though!

Thanks for the responses. I, too, believe it to be in the extra fine grade range.
No, there doesn't appear to be any mint luster left on the coin; however, I'm off to the hardware store today to buy some pure acetone - give it a little bath. Maybe I can float enough of the 75 year build up from the surface that some of the luster may show through. I'll let y'all know how it looks after the acetone.

Okay, this is after about 30 minutes in acetone, distilled water rinse, and blow dry with my air brush.
The green is gone, and that's what I wanted. I'm not going to do anything more to it other than put it to bed in my album. I don't know if I mentioned it, or not, but this was the last one I needed to complete my Washington quarter set (1932 thru 1998). I'm kinda stoked about getting it.
Anyway, what opinions now as to the grade. Bear in mind the pictures are scans not photographs. As much as I'd like to say that there is some mint luster left, I can't - it's gone, but, nonetheless, I think the coin cleaned up pretty good (or should I say acetoned up pretty good?). I await your opinions on it in it's current state. Thanks.
