here's mine against a new 5p

weighs 0.65g, the 5p is 18mm so I'd guess mine
is somewhere around 6mm. just imagine getting something
like this back as change, and people think the new 5p's
are easy to lose.

Topcat - Does it have a date on it?

1951 - the last year of production with mintage 5,150,000

From 1952 they produced the 10 Ore in the same 15mm size but without a hole.

Mmmmmm. Interesting. Thanks, Bas

H.H. I've seen that bust before in my collection. Do you have any information on it?

How on earth did the die cutter manage to cut the dies for it, without a jewelers loupe?
I think that is a fair question, because I am a gem facetor.
I wouldn't be surprised that lenses existed at this time, but they were probably rather valuable possessions. What kind of gems do you facet? Several of my friends here in the states are gem cutters...they have faceted a few sapphires for me.

The tiniest coin in my collection is a silver wire kopek of Peter the Great, from 1709. It's roughly oval shaped, 9mm long and 6mm wide; weight supposed to be 0.28 grams for the type - I suspect mine is smaller.
Don't have a photo of it, unfortunately (lost it again a few months ago, right in the ziploc), so here's my second smallest, on a British sixpence:

Ionia-Phokaia-Tetartemorion-Griffin---How-Small-Can-You-Go?

Leo I monogram AE nummus, 9mm.

I really want to get a proper "minim" nummus of, say, 7 millimeters or smaller, but doubt I'll ever get one with enough detail to even identify it as Roman, let alone anything specifically.

TC, I have no idea on how to attribute mine.
the reverse on it needs a lot of soaking time,
after which I'm hoping it'll reveal something.

Thanks H.H.

That bust is so 'familiar' with the tilt backwards and the clean face. I wish I could place it. I will keep an eye out for it because I know I have a match here somewhere.

If you (or anyone else) gets it before I do, please let me know. I hate unsolved 'riddles'.

Good luck with the search for the Kopek, J.M. I hate losing a coin, too.
I have yet to decide how I am to mount this Tetartemorion, so that I don't lose it.

Augustus Maximus - Hats off to you.

You are 'Spot-On' when you mentioned the Indan Fanam.

I have purchased a rare Indian tiny gold 1/4 fanam, from southern India, 14th-16th centuries.

It measures 2.5 mm and weighs only .06 gm

Seller's comments.
These are often attributed to Vijayanagar, but the exact provenance of these coins is unknown. The coins are usually crudely struck with a "cross" or "leaf" design on one side and an uncertain crude design on another.

I believe the uncertain side is supposed to be a Zebu (holy cow) but this speculation.

This is my favorite. It looks like Byzantine coin with cross. Its 0,8mm and 0,39gr.

Panjabi - I don't want to sound 'disbelieving', but that coin looks a whole lot bigger than 0.8 mm to me.

Perhaps you mean 0.8 cm? That would sound closer to the mark. (I do apologise if I am wrong.)

Also, at 0.8 mm I would expect the weight to be less than 0.39 gm, and more like 0.0039 gm.

A.M. My hat is off to you, and I bow to your (superior) knowledge, once again.

You stated that:-

Quote:
The only coin I can think of TC that might be smaller would be an Indian gold fanam .

and here is my 1/4 Fanam that arrived today, somewhat delayed because of the 'festive season' increase in postal items.

I have photographed it alongside the same 1883 Morgan dollar.

Ionia-Phokaia-Tetartemorion-Griffin---How-Small-Can-You-Go?

You were absolutely right.

I wonder, does anyone have a smaller coin?

Not bad for a hormonal teenager I was going to get one at one time but decided against it on the grounds that I would lose it after 10 minutes.
