What is the reason behind the 2 differing obverses for the 2006 toonies? {one with the date between Elizabeth & D.G. Regina [on top] with the maple leaf on the bottom and the other with the date between a of Regina & the E of Elizabeth with the maple leaf on the 'top'

See this link and scroll down to 10th Anniversary of the Two Dollar circulation coin. This will explain the reason for the two different designs.

it has more than two. There is one with the RCM logo on the bottom and date on top, vice versa. then one like churchill, and one with an anniversary date 1996-2006.

What does "one like churchill" mean. I only have the other three, don't know what this one is. Help!

The 'Churchill' Toonie is a 10th anniversary of the two dollar coin that shows a different version of the Polar Bear.
The bears head is pointing to the sky instead of straight ahead. If you want to get technical, there are two versions of the bears ear, a normal ear and a pixie ear.

There was an online contest and the name Churchill was chosen as the name for the bear on the toonie.

I think that's a mistake in the catalog listing. They are all "Pixie Ear" - there were no "Normal Ear" made for circulation. T_Y says it's a hub die issue in this thread:

So it's an accidental variety, not an intentionally different obverse?

The "Churchill Pixie" ear was minted in Winnipeg for all the circulation coins. The "Normal" ear was minted in Ottawa and used in the Special Edition Uncirculated sets. Two different mints, two different Toonies.

Just a quick followup to Aiglet7..
so if I understandcorrectly there are in effect 4 obverses for the 1996 toonie, i.e. both the single date and the double date 2006 toonies have a version of the date above or below the inset core. but is there any breakout of the mintages of the different versions?
