The Baldwin hoard keeps cropping up in coin articles (most recently in regards to the benchmark collection being sold) but I have never heard what exactly the Baldwin hoard is and what the story is behind it.
I'm sure it would be of interest to other coin collectors too.

Its stated that......

The Benchmark Collection stands as the most significant set of Australian pre-decimal coinage ever assembled. Mark Duff of Strand Coins in Sydney, Australia, carefully compiled the collection over a period of 25 years, drawing coins from many of the most important collections of Australian coins.

There was another collection by Baldwin (UK) but that contained UK coins from a haord in Brussels and was not to my knowledge called a benchmark collection.

Baldwin was a noted coin dealer and purchased a hoard of coins found in Brussels in 1908.
That is before our Commonwealth coinage existed.
As a dealer he purchased quantities of Australian pre decimals. Not hard to do when your shop is in London and the mints in Birmingham (Heatons) and London.
So there are a number of high grade early coppers that make the RD designation for colour that come from his stock.
It isn't necessarily true that the Benchmark Collection is the most significant set ever assembled. There are a couple of PCGS sets that might be as good as well as a couple of raw sets and then there are a few proof sets that exceed the Benchmark.
The Benchmark is however the best in certain rarities and probably the only complete set of circulation coins.

Baldwins (a UK dealer) had rolls of 1911 Pennies, 1911 and 1912-H half pennies. This is the reason they are relatively abundant with original mint red.

This stuff all came from what was known in the day as "Baldwins Basement" . The Aussie , Canadian and Newfoundland coins of the 1909 -1913 period that are quite abundant in the bronze and small silver denominations in superb grade , are from this hoard. Randy Weir a noted Canadian dealer was a major source.
