ex-lucky penny piece. This was a normal coin until the rim was smashed by a machine that mints an aluminum ring around the coin with advertising. They are called " Encased Coins" and sometimes the cent in the middle falls out or is busted out. This is the result.

Not sure but when we were kids we used to play a game where we would lag cents to the second line on concretee sidewalks. If you are not familiar with sidewalks, there are separation lines every so many feet. Closest coin won the others. Kind of like horseshoes with coins. Cents (pennies) back then were always the coin of choice due to not much bounce. Naturally the rims of all such coins ended up like that. Imagine a time when even a 09S VDB or 14D was just a penny.

I agree this is a Ex " Encased Coin", I used to have a few of them with something like "lucky penny" on the ring around the coin
