i would like to know if its the real thing or a copy

Hi and welcome to the forum. These coins look fake to me no matter what. They are very interesting. Often, they are called cartwheel coins due to their size. If you have a way to host your pictures, you can paste the url to the pic here in a post and we can look at it. Personally, I have never seen this coin counterfeited, but my expertise lays more in US coins. Hopefully, Aethling will be along to help you out.

It's probably real, there's alot of 1797 twopences out there. 2 ounces is also the correct weight. Forgeries would be uncommon I would think. Firstly because the series never took of in circulation most due to their sheer size and secondly the're not exactly scarce.

Contemporary forgeries I would think would have been hard to make and the amount of copper required would have probably been costly.

That is correct, these are very common, and not worth duplicating. probably around $10 value, unless of extremely high grade

There are modern reproductions of both the 1797 twopence and the cartwheel pence. They occasionally appear on ebay and, so far, have always been properly labelled as reproductions.
