I'm a new collector, but yesterday I got an itch for some ancients. I don't know much about them. Up until now I've only owned 1.

These are of course low price coins. Especially the last one. I liked it because the faint and worn image of those people looks sort of eerie.

The others are just neat too me. I'm always shocked by such interesting ancient coins being sold for so little.

What do you think of them?

If any of you ancient specialists feel like sharing what you know about these coins I'd love to hear it.

Thanks, Scott

Nice to see that the bug bit you.

Yes, it is interesting that one can get quite good ancient coins for less than most of the NCLT issues marketed by the mints.

The first is an issue of Gallienus with the Oriens Avg reverse, with the mark in the left field I would attribute it as RIC#494 minted in Milan.

Postscript: Grrrr, not enough coffee yet - typos.

A gentle and interesting introduction to ancient coins.
Well done!

Try and read as much as you can before serious collecting.
That will ensure that the 'bug' bites deep!
Strong coffee helps!

The first coin is a billon antoninianus of Gallienus, struck between c. 260 to 268 CE. I recognize the coin, I've seen it listed on AncientGalleon's ebay store. I've done business with him before, great seller.

The second one is an AE nummus of the Constantine with the campgate reverse, struck under the Constantinian dynasty during the early to mid 4th Century CE.

The third coin is a bronze FEL TEMP REPARATIO (roughly translates to "happy days are here again") showing a Roman soldier spearing a barbarian. It was struck c. 348 to 358 CE, probably under Constantius II, but don't quote me on that.

The last one is an AE3 with the two soldiers reverse. It says GLORIA EXERCITUS ("Glory to the Army"). It was struck during the 330s, during the Constantinian dynasty.
