Got a mere $60 in nickels from bank today. They were all machined wrapped.

I always wonder about the history of these coins, especially when I hit a good batch. It's even more interesting when I hit a good batch of machine wrapped, since I begin to wonder statistically how these ended up in my $60 batch and what else did I NOT get?

Anyhow, I ended up with 3 buffalos (1935 and two 1926). 6 silvers, all 43P. A couple dozen pre 1960s (which I keep).

I noticed a few of the 67/68s were in very nice shape, very sharp edges. When I looked a little closer, I noticed some were "S" mint marks. Does this mean they are proofs? Oddly, there's a few 65-69 that are also in great shape, but not "S". Input? Keepers?

I believe that that the 1969 s nickel was a buisness strike. I find them way too much to be proofs. Good finds though. I'm swearing off nickels for awhile. I just went through a entire box and found nothing worth keeping. I got half a roll of pre-1960 nickels that I will likely dump back into circulation.

Nice finds!

I think the S-mint are keepers, even if they are not proof.

San Francisco made both proof and business strike nickels in '68, '69, and '70. Your coins are in very good shape, but all business strikes.

No proofs were made from 65-67, but there are proof like "special mint sets" out there. Your coins look like very nice business strikes, not SMS coins. Check the reverse... nickels from these years with 6 full steps will command a hefty premium, and the strike quality suggests you have a shot at at least partial steps on some of these.

great advice. What magnification do I need to see the steps? Any examples of full vs. partials I could look at?

Nevermind. I was lazy. Google showed me some good examples.

Would ANY full step 1960s ("S" or not) command a premium?

You have already been offered some (accurate) expert advise on the coins from the 1960's era ... I will not repeat it other than to say I concur.

Yes indeed - if truly 'full step'. Connoisseurs of the series have a very specific set of criteria that must be met to qualify for the Full Step designation - all of which is available to you on line.

Best of wishes with your continued searches.
