Hello I came across an As of Germaicus( father of Caligula) struck under Claudius. I am trying to expand my collection to the other members of the Imperial family (Drusus, Germanicus, Younger Drusus, Antonia, ect ect..) Is this coin authentic and what is a "just" price for it. Thanks as always

1. Please post the reserve as well.
2. Soaking (long enough) in olive oil should get rid of the verdigris.

At first glance can not see anything wrong with it.

I don't think that's BD and I'd say $50-$75.

Bronze disease looks splotchy and pitted with well-defined edges.

Olive oil is weakly acidic. A long soak in olive oil may make it look much darker. That would be a pity, because the patina over the rest of the coin has a nice color.
In this case, I reckon that Verdicare might be better.

Nice coin I agree with the price Ras mentioned. I soak in olive oil should removed the deposits and darken the coin a bit.

Hi, Sel,

I understand that some 4 and 1/2 years ago a forum member 'BadThad' was developing this 'Verdi-Care', that is now being sold on ebay by 'q3excessive' (same guy?).
I can see that you are enthusiastic about it, but is BadThad still a forum member?

Is it available here in Australia? (The 'Priority' postage is as much as the product cost.)

Does anyone else have an opinion on the product?

BadThad is still a memeber of CCF and posted yesterday (somewhere). I got 2 bottles of verdicare from the US. I got 2 bottles because the postage was horrendous. Send him a message and ask him.

I disagree about the price actually. Ten years ago the market seemed to get flooded with bronze coins of Germanicus and they were selling cheap. Caligula apparently had a huge output. Most of the Germanicus AE's are left facing (Caligula issue) with fewer right facing (Claudius issue) AE's. Finding a decent one for under $100 is almost impossible and the Claudius issues are usually a bit higher.

This one is rather pleasing to the eye and the green stuff looks benign to me (I could be wrong !)

Several years ago I found one for auction (middle of the week early afternoon) the pics were lousy and the bids lackluster.
I lucked out ! It came in for less than I expected (more than $100 but much less than $200)

Obverse defect but I can live with it

Sellers less than impressive pic

that's a pretty nice lookin' coin AM, green stuff or no.
i have used verdi-care, with generally positive results. it's not magic, but I've been pleased with it. if all that stuff is hard, give it a soak, pick at it with a toothpick after a bit..some of that stuff may come loose.
it does seem to be pretty good at treating softer BD as well.

good stuff overall.

Here is Mr Thads response :It would likely see some improvement but not full removal. Most of the verdigris is heavy and probably cannot be removed without a lot of surface damage. I suspect there is a lot of pitting under the heavy areas

First off I would like to thank Thad and the CCF family. Second is that due to the obvious damage to the coin I will pass but if any one wants it it can be found at Ancient Imports on Vcoins.

P.P. - I did send BadThad a message but I did not get a reply, from him.

I also sent a message to q3excessive on ebay and he replied that they didn't post overseas and that the $18.80 charge for overseas postage was an " ebay add-on".

The last time I looked the U.K. WAS overseas from the U.S.A.. How did you get him to send some to you? Did you bat those eyelashes . . . . .?
