As I said before, I think the coin grades EF-40. Whether or not it is cleaned I cannot say. Although I would agree with the second dealer who said that the coin should be heavily discounted below trends. Not 40% of trends but I would pay maybe $600 myself. The whole Bright white coins with the obverse marks and black spot, combined with the obverse weakness doesn't really get you any points on desirability or eye-appeal.

Ok guys, we all know that NFL coins are all "sleepers".
And, watch out for a flood of NFL fakes coming from "our favorite" country, the PRoC, soon... they are already selectively and carefully introduced in Europe in medium to high grades including the $2 gold!
Oh yes, right with the auction houses. Most European collectors do not like graded and slabbed coins a lot. There is the inconspicuous "entrance" to the market.
Maybe in a few days I can elaborate a bit more. so please do not ask at this time.
Back to this coin.
it is simple, try and find a NFL coin above VF20 from before 1900. Oh yes, it is possible... BUT $$$$$$$$$$
so, now you really want this coin and you have tried for some time to get one... what is your option?
please be realistic AND objective in your answers.
and remember, the mintage is ONLY 8,000!!
IMO, this coin should sell at Trends PLUS a premium!
send it to NGC and or PCGS and it will come back as a 45 or 50.AND, most will accept these grades at large auctions and not even discount them!
all is just my opinion!!(but some, the European thing, is knowledge, based on a very recent (24 hrs) experience.

All that is true. Perhaps my opinion would differ if I was a NFLD type collector. I'm only into NFLD coins that have a good eye-appeal and a good price point. Although, I agree this is an exceptionally rare coin.

Ok guys, I decided to do one part now instead of going to bed.
Please everyone,( and especially SPP ( you have a super NFL collection)),
grade these coins just by the bad pictures and give your honest evaluation AND WHY you say what you say it is!
these coins, and a couple dozens other NFL and Canadian coins are available in Europe.
will be intersting... If I am wrong, I will have a ton of 6 month old duck eggs in my face...
Please look carefully, and try not to be fooled..
they are very high grade...would you agree?
Am I wrong?
colored lines indicate obv and rev of the respective coin... not that it matters at all.

|There have already been a flood of Newfoundland counterfeits for at least the last three years. Sgt. Tony when he was with the RCMP counterfeit squad in Vancouver showed us at least 25 to 30 pieces as I recall at the NSNS coin show at Oakridge including an 1888 gold $2.00 (gold over tungsten) plus all the key date stuff including a 1946 5 cents. Really nothing new on that front. The quality was not that great and it would be hard to fool an experienced numismatist such as yourself 47P7.
Also even though the mintage is allegedly 8000 pieces the 1885 NFLD ten cents coin is surprisingly easy to acquire except in very high grades (only 3 Mint state pieces by ICCS). There are currently 3 listed on ebay including one of ours and four have sold since late September. I also have another sitting in front of me as I write this that I just got back from ICCS last month (XNH388 graded Good 6). Over 170 plus pieces have been graded overall by ICCS. Newfoundland coins may be sleepers but the collectors are even sleepier.

Both halves look like counterfeits to me back of the hair detail doesn't look right nose bridge incomplete the 2 on the 1882 H looks odd as well. Both coins even though appearing high grade have an over all washed out non crisp appearance , but then what the heck do I know !

Pacific, You must have missed one or two on that site. BUT I never said these are at an auction listed on that site. I did say these are available in Europe. there are more...
but also Canadian 50 cent pieces and Gold pieces, all fake.
I can not go into details, as I have initiated criminal charges against the seller with the local police in Europe.
I did that last night.
According to my info back this AM, Police in 2 neighboring countries are aware of this "dealer" now and will act accordingly.
that is all I know at this time. I would tell you where it is but your email is turned off.
BTW your guess why these are fakes is perhaps also correct. But there is a 100% sure marker you missed..
one would normally not think about it. Unless, as with most other fakes, one has a real one to compare.
have another look...
unless you or others will come up with the answer, I might post images to compare. It will then be obvious.
I am nearly willing to bet, if these and the other coin available , are listed as individual coins for sale on the Bay, most, if not all would not recognize the issue.

Comparing my 1885 50 Cent piece to the counterfeit 1885 shown above I see that the counterfeit has different size letters and spacing on NEWFOUNDLAND on the obverse. The numbers on the reverse of the counterfeit appear slightly thicker to me than on my authentic coin. I also notice that my coin has a wide rim around it and then the dentils, while the counterfeit piece seems to have a very small to no rim and dentils immediately. That may just be something to do with cropping the photo? Or is it really like that. Anyways, that is what my attention was drawn to.

I'm still learning, but if there is some obvious reason that these are fake that has not been mentioned I would love to know so I know what to look for in the future.

47P7, you seem to have a lot of knowledge, but I'm not sure why posts like this have to be so cryptic. It seems more beneficial to the community to just come out and say "these coins are fake, and here are the markers to look for" instead of making it into some kind of treasure hunt. Perhaps it's just me, but if I have to come back to a thread over and over again trying to decipher what the heck is going on, it becomes a frustrating experience.

As Sgt Friday used to say in " Dragnet" ..........."Just the facts Ma'am ,just the facts" I agree kbbpll, if it is information share it for all or just do not say anything. This forum is about knowledge and sharing it with others. I love being a coin dealer and making money from the hobby, but above all I enjoy the giving back............cash to the tax man ...............and information and knowledge back to fellow numismatists. Heck, no stupid questions in numismatics and very few secrets in our small community.
