Here's a new acquisition of mine. There's some dissent among those who have seen the coin in hand so I thought I'd let the forum opine.

Nice coin! I'll say AU50. It looks a lot better than some I have been looking at recently.

Some weakness in the braid but I think it graded EF-40.

I agree with EF40. There is wear on the eyebrow and in the hair. Still a nice coin though.

VF30. I find ICCS tough on these coins.

ICCS is very tough on these coins . It would probably be a VF30 based on the two letter certificate it resides in. Ngc probably EF45

I would have to say, EF-40 too, is the black spot under the date on the coin or, was it caused by the camera?

Thank you for participating. A dealer told me the coin is overgraded and cleaned. I responded that any 19th-century silver coin that isn't black was either carefully preserved or cleaned at some point. The black spot is on the coin; I'm wondering what should be done about it. According to the 2014 ICCS report, there are five finer - three of which are mint state. I was pleased to find this coin in such a grade but that dealer dismissed it as junk; he even speculated that the flip had been doctored. Another dealer said the coin has flaws but he could see why it's in an EF-40 holder. However he said it might sell for as low as 40% of trend. In any event, it's now a fixture in my set and won't be sold anytime soon. What do you think?

I actually agree with ICCS on this one- I think it completely accurately graded
I would be quite happy having that piece in my collection

I think 47P7 asked the right question but a touch prematurely when he stated "OK who is right?" Is ICCS right for calling it EF40 ? Is the dealer right saying it is cleaned and over graded ? Or is the other dealer right in saying he could see why it is in an EF 40 holder but he would discount it to 40 per cent of trends. Maybe all three are right. The answer to 47P7 question probably comes in the sales price of the coin if it was sold. If it was me and this was my coin for sale I would say yes technically it is EF40 in an ICCS holder, the coin has no pizazz as it has definitely been cleaned at one point and holds little or no eye appeal to me or a potential customer, therefore I would sell it at a market grade of VF30. So lets see Trends is currently $1200.00 CDN in EF40 and $650.00 CDN in VF20 so lets say VF 30 is between $750-900 CDN depending on how we price split grade pieces. If I sold this coin I would be very happy with a sales price of $675.00 for this piece. This would probably be the market graded price as opposed to technical grading. That said this is a great coin and would easily find a home to a happy Newfy collector.
