Recently, I've visited a few websites where dealers have coins for sale that have been graded by tpgs. Some of these dealers actually describe the coins as lower grade than what the slab says.

This is old coppers that I'm talking about.

One I remember in particular is a late date large cent graded au58 by pcgs, and the dealer says in the description that the coin is actually more like au53.

Is this because the coins have been slabbed for a long period of time, and have somehow degraded, or is the dealer just saying that the TPG was wrong when they graded it?

I'm wondering because I'm looking at some slabbed coins for sale that appear to be in old, and even chipped slabs.

When a TPG puts a coin in a slab, is the coin supposed to remain in it's assigned grade for a certain length of time? Indefinitely?

earlycents.com is one of the websites where I've seen this.

I feel that grading coins is subjective and opinionated. Not everyone will agree on the same grade for the same coin. The dealer has his own opinion of the grade just as any TPG. If you want to buy a slabbed coin then I would suggest on buying the coin in the slab not the grade on the slab.

The EAC (Early American Copper) community does not have the same grading standards/system as what the TPG's use. By EAC standards most TPG large cents are overgraded especially in the middle grade range. At the very high end and the very low end there tends to much less difference
