I just got one of those RCM updates: saying the free 2014 holiday set, with purchases of $200 are ending soon. I don't collect any of these circulation sets. I much prefer their yearly silver proof sets. Even with the 99.99 silver sets getting pricey I still enjoy them very much. If it was the only mint purchase in a year it wouldn't be so bad. It's a sad comment with silver under $20 an ounce; it's very uncalled for especially with the penny gone. I really wish they'd bring back the penny for this set at least. Oops I forgot image. I just noticed this was my , it should been on my 1998 set post . I never thought 500 would go so fast, or I had so much to say!! I wonder what new developments in my collecting habits will occur in the next 500 posts. One time 250 posts, so I could do trades seemed a lifetime away!! They should raise the bar on these sets and make both the Loon & Toon a special design. Then these would truly be a nice collector set, that affordable to the masses for special occasions. They could reuse some older designs, if unable to generate new ideas. One example would be modified Alex Colville design.
I'm thinking when a person pulls the set out in 10 years or so, it's still something special and not just a common item. They've made a great first step with the unique loonies. So there's hope yet. It's nice being in an affordable range. They could do a package upgrade too, since these are meant to be a gift. The inside cover could have an area set out for giver and receiver information along with a place for a message. A separate card can get lost easily, so not a good solution. Maybe do a foil design on outer packaging to make it stand out and appear special.

There should be a 50 cent piece in there too.

Quote: although I am not sure why lol, Maybe I can try and sell the loonie That was my reason not to by the set for $10+ The Loonie will not cost more than $20, and ebay full of these offers. Added: I think, this tradition came from the far past, to gift some coin for the occasions ("Lucky penny"...etc). Nowdays, I just do not believe, that the general public (non collectors) will be glad to get as gift some coins in the card. Many people just do not pay attention on the circulation coin design, and they do not care. More will pay attention to the special packaging, style of "2007 Baby set with tins". And the "holydays sets" will not be appreciated as the items , after couple of years no one care, what exactly someone gave them as a gift for some holiday. Imo - for collectors (with accent on the young generation) only.

Quote: That was my reason not to by the set for $10+ Well if you take out the $2.40 and just try to sell the loonie by its self you would have to get just about $8 to break even so if you sold the loonie for say $16 you could make a profit and since most other sellers are selling the set at $20 ish( the ones who didnt buy them 50% off) your still under the full set price plus you would save on shipping a tiny bit if you shipped the coin letter mail. Alot of messing around for a few bucks though lol. but I see sellers doing it all the time, breaking up sets and selling a single coin so there must be some money in it...heck I don't know lol.

also you have to spend the 200$ on specific coins, there is a list, you can't just buy any thing you want to qualify. and the 20 for 20$, 50 for 50$ etc aren't on the list..fyi.

But for occasional sellers, yes, this is a mess for few $...

It will be interesting to see if the sets will appreciate in 5 yrs or so? Mainly do to the fact of being the first year to have a special loonie in each set. Will intact set sell higher, because so many have been broken up by loonie hunters. I didn't read entire ad, so didn't know ; you had to choose from a list of coins. I like when RCM offers the bonus books containing history. I'm looking for the 2008 book about RCM history and the book for the war of 1812. These would be wonderful homeschooling assets and Canada history.
