No expert here but it looks very nice to me. Here is a link to PCGS Photograde that you can use to help you grade it....

http://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/#/SLQT1/Grades

Someone with more knowledge will be along soon to help you.

It looks mint state to me but I'm fairly new to grading. Plus better photos of obverse and reverse of coin would be required to give an accurate grade.

It has no grade since there is no reverse.

It's a Type I. Strike looks good. Appears to be a full head & all shield rivets are there. Reverse pic tiny but appears to be a nice coin. Bigger pics would help.

I could believe this coin could be MS. It is just a little difficult for me to tell if there is rub on the knee. Current numismedia has it listed from AU58 $204 to MS63 $325. I think it is a nice example .

Sounds like someone was trying to get a bargain out of you. Not nice.

I would be VERY happy if someone wanted to sell me that for a VF price. Not to mention the toning.

Gorgeous coin...I would grade it MS, judging from the pictures.
As far as someone telling you it is VF; he was either trying to scam you or has no idea on how to grade a coin.
