I agree that experience is a good friend to have with you when picking out fake coins.

I also agree that being familiar with the style and fabric of any issue of ancient coins you may be interested in, is well worth being familiar with. Nevertheless in this regard, it is well worth picking through those issues you are interested in, in VCOINS and Wildwinds for comparison. Looking at the fake coins data bases for comparison is also a great asset.

At least you will get a much better idea of what appears to be a poor quality fake, and also how dangerous and deceptive excellent quality fakes can be.
Don't be discouraged, however.
There exists a good range of simple and relatively cheap non destructive tests that can be applied to excellent quality fakes.

Finally if all else fails, send or take your suspicious coin to a specialist and experienced ancient coin auction lot describer, who has the highest reputation.

Actually, I have a few really nice ancient coins that are satisfying to own; they are the 'stars' of my collection.

I also have a ton of rubbish coins!

It is the rubbish coins that give the most fun or 'bang for the buck' in terms of providing a challenge to identify them. You can buy them much more cheaply as unidentified coins, and if you are then able to achieve full identification, you then have an asset which has at least doubled, and probably much more, in value.

As a 'spin off', you gain much experience and knowledge that will help you in the identification of fake coins.
