I'm quite certain this has not been cleaned as it shows cartwheel lustre consistent with natural wear on both sides. Plus, that spot of tarnish to the left of "Canada" is untouched. I believe the coin got the directional scratches simply from falling out of its holder and rubbing against other coins which had also fallen out during transit (I have advised sender to use stronger material for a holder). The scratches, as far as I can see, are not continuous but short and one by one, there's just quite a lot of them so it looks continuous. Opinions on grade?

I would grade AU-50 and believe it to be cleaned.

It looks like it may have had a light cleaning especially on the obverse. EF-40

VF30 The Bell Tower has considerable wear as well as Georges hair and ear lobe. I believe it has been cleaned. The scratches are too long to be caused by other coins and all go in the same direction, consistent with being cleaned.

Here's better shot of the obverse - artificial lighting makes my photos look bad. This one is somewhat clearer, and more obvious with the wear on the hair. The lines don't all go in the same direction, they actually go in any direction. Edit: This is done with the same setup as the first photos as the inside of the window is basically my coin photography space. It had also been rubbing on the coin which has stayed on the holder while it rolled around inside the envelope with two coins that fell off too.

After seeing the revised photo, I will admit it does not appear to have been cleaned. As has been said many times on this forum, it is difficult to grade coins from a photo. Sometimes lines show that are not there and other times with the right lighting, scratches or marks on the coin do not show.

VF35. Way too many mark. Cleaned or not, this coin has no eye appeal. As mentioned, the bell tower is quite worn. The black grime or tarnish on the reverse highlights the nicks and scratches. For one of the more common king George VI dollars, I hope you didn't pay much over spot price.

It's hard for me to tell conclusively if it's been cleaned based on these photos, so I'll reserve judgement on that. On the matter of grade, I would grade the obverse to be EF-40, however I think the reverse shows significantly more wear, which for me, would yield a net grade of VF-30/35. Although the 1939 silver $ are widely available, they are one my favourite coins ever made.

VF-30 in my opinion! Possibly a EF but I don't think so.
