Hi everyone,

My brother wants to get me a coin for Christmas.

Lately, I've been intrigued by the large Ptolemy coins and was wondering what you all think of this one:

Thanks so much!

This is one of my favorite series. However they are not that easy to pin down to the specific ruler. My best guess is Ptolemy III. Here is a web site that will help you with this coin type. http://www.megagem.com/ancient/ptolemy_series.html

The coin is in nice shape and considering the seller will take best offer looks like a good deal. If you like large coins these coins offer the best value for the money.

Thanks everybody, it seems like a really cool coin!

I do see what you mean by BD, pishpash. I see what looks like a bit of lime green in the picture of the side.

I haven't come across BD yet and hope to never have to deal with it. It looks really scary.

As always, I appreciate everyone's input!

I took a look at some of the other coins from this seller, the coin that you are interested is genuine. However some others that he has listed are not IMO.

I think I'm going to ask my brother for this one.

I have a 1/4 fanam/bele (are they the same thing?) that would look really cool against this coin.

This will be my biggest one yet.

I just have to figure out what to offer for it. I've never done the Best Offer option because I don't want to offend the seller.

Any advice on what to offer would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much!

You could knock 15% off and if he refuses, ask him what price he would accept?

His starting price is very fair for this type of coin, you would expect to paid $90 and up on one in this condition. Try offering him $60, that would be a steal IMO.

I agree with Echizento, at 45 grams in this condition, $60 would be a steal

He accepted my offer of $65, which I'm really happy with.

I'll be sure to take pictures after I unwrap it. :)

With this and a clipped Canadian Penny from my sister for Christmas, I think I've done really well!

Thanks again, everyone!

That is a very impressive coin and I am shocked by the price !
It has every appearance of being genuine ...... but one. The jumbo sized Ptolemaic bronzes usually have signs of being turned or filed on the edges. Normally these sort of marks are warning signs but on these issues are quite common.

I am not saying the coin is not genuine !!!
Only that I would expect some edge work on a coin of this size !

I would have grabbed it myself at this price.

Thanks for the info, Fvrivs. I'll keep an eye out for that when the coin comes in.

I'll take some more pictures of the edge and post them.

I just hope that it's a unique one by not having that edge for whatever reason.

Some members of my family think that it's impossible to collect genuine ancient coins, even though I've been telling them otherwise since I discovered ancients myself. So it's really important for me, as I'm sure is the same with everyone else, to have authentic coins.

Thanks again everyone!
